Chart Tab — Climate Atlas & Zone Intelligence

View historical climate statistics for an ocean zone (wind rose, calms, gales, currents month by month) and get an AI-assisted zone briefing to help you pick your departure window.

Sidebar › Chart (map icon, labelled "Chart"). The panel shows two sub-tabs: Climate and Intelligence.

Picking a zone

What it's for: every piece of data on this tab is tied to a specific ocean zone. Until a zone is selected, the Climate panel only shows a welcome message and the Intelligence sub-tab does not appear.

How to use it: 1. Open the Chart tab in the sidebar. 2. On the map, click a wind rose marker for an ocean zone. 3. The panel fills in: zone name, coordinates, description, and the current month's data. 4. To clear the zone and return to the welcome screen, click the ✕ in the top-right of the header.

Tips & limits: - With no zone selected, two messages appear: "Click a wind rose marker on the map to view pilot chart data for that ocean zone" and a reminder "Right-click on the map to add waypoints". - Data comes from pilot charts: historical statistics of wind, waves, gales and calms compiled from decades of maritime observations. These are climatological averages, not forecasts.

Climate Sub-tab

Zone header & description

What it's for: identifying the displayed zone and locating it. How to use it: read the name (in gold), then the coordinates (e.g. 25°N 40°W) and the description text below the header. Options & settings:

Tips & limits: the description follows the interface language (EN/FR).

Best Months (month selector)

What it's for: changing the displayed month and spotting at a glance the best sailing season for the zone. How to use it: 1. Find the Best Months row: twelve abbreviated buttons (Jan, Feb, … Dec). 2. The months recommended for the zone are highlighted in green. 3. Click any month to reload every statistic (cards, current, wind rose) for that month.

Options & settings:

Tips & limits: the selected month is shared with the rest of the app (it also drives the scores in the Intelligence sub-tab). Changing the month here updates the AI briefing if you re-run it.

Monthly stat cards

What it's for: summarizing the chosen month's average conditions at a glance. How to use it: read the four cards in the grid, then the current banner below. Options & settings:

Tips & limits: if the chosen month is part of the best season, a Best Season badge appears next to the month name.

Wind Rose & analysis

What it's for: visualizing the distribution of wind by sector and getting an automatically written interpretation. How to use it: 1. The Wind Rose radar chart plots the frequency (%) of each direction across 16 sectors. 2. Hover a spoke to show a tooltip: direction, frequency percentage, and average speed in knots. 3. Read the analysis block below the chart (info icon): it summarizes the dominant wind, the secondary component, calms, gales and swell.

Options & settings:

Text analysis Generated sentences: dominant direction (with Beaufort term: calm, moderate breeze, gale…), predictability, calms, gales, swell

Tips & limits: - The more a direction dominates (≥ 25%), the more the wind is judged "predictable"; below 15%, the analysis flags variable winds. - The analysis mentions "expect frequent motoring" from 10% calms, and a ⚠ warning from 10% gales. - The data reflects climatology: use it to plan a season, not to decide a 48-hour departure (see the live forecast).

Intelligence Sub-tab

Weather Anomalies

What it's for: automatically detecting signs of deteriorating weather in the 7-day forecast at the zone center (Buys-Ballot barometric rules). How to use it: 1. Open the Intelligence sub-tab: the Weather Anomalies card loads automatically on open. 2. Read the anomaly count and the severity color (red = danger, amber = warning, blue = info). 3. Expand/collapse the card with the chevron; show more anomalies with Show all / Show less. 4. Use the i icon to show/hide the explanation of the detection rules.

Options & settings:

Info icon (i) Shows the explainer text (pressure drops, frontal passages, wind escalation…)

Tips & limits: requires an internet connection (Open-Meteo forecast). Fetching happens when you expand the card, not in the background, to avoid rate limits. "No anomalies detected — conditions normal" means nothing unusual was found over the 7 days.

Zone Intelligence (AI briefing)

What it's for: producing a synthesized zone briefing — climate, dangers, best window, trend, POIs and recommendations — combining computed data and AI-written text. How to use it: 1. Click the violet Analyze zone button. 2. The app moves through visible phases: "Gathering zone data…", "Checking AI availability…", "Generating intelligence briefing…". 3. Data blocks appear as they arrive (monthly scores, dangers, forecast, POIs), then the AI Briefing streams in. 4. When done, use the Re-analyze icon (arrows) to rerun, or the chevron to collapse the section.

Options & settings:

Monthly Scores Bars from 0 to 100 per month (green ≥ 80, dark green ≥ 60, amber ≥ 40, red otherwise); the current month is ringed in gold. Hover = score /100
Dangers Critical anomalies + nearby dangers (name + distance in nautical miles)
7-Day Forecast Daily average wind (green/amber/red by gust) and wave height
Nearby POIs Ports, marinas, anchorages, dangers, with distance; button to expand beyond 5
AI Briefing Continuously generated text, based on the data above

Tips & limits: - The AI briefing takes into account the month selected in the Climate sub-tab: change the month before rerunning to target a different window. - If the AI server is unavailable, an offline briefing is shown instead (climate, dangers, best window, trend, POIs) without AI text. - On error, a red message and a Retry link appear. - The AI briefing and some data (forecast, anomalies) require a connection; monthly scores and POIs remain available offline.
