Overlays & presets overview

The Overlays panel gathers every map overlay, sorted into 8 categories, with saved configurations (presets) and active-count badges.

Opening and moving the panel

Floating Overlays button

What it's for: a single entry point to every map overlay.

How to use it: 1. Spot the Overlays button sitting on the map. 2. A single click opens the panel (fixed width, height ≈ half the screen). 3. Press and drag the button (or the title bar, dotted grip) to move the panel anywhere. 4. Click the × at the top right to collapse it.

Options & settings:

Drag grip Moves the panel; a genuine drag won't open it
× cross Collapses the panel back to the single button

Tips & limits: - Dragging and clicking are distinguished: moving the button won't open it by accident. - The chosen position is kept until you let the app recompute placement automatically.

The 8 category tabs

Tabs and active badges

What it's for: grouping the long overlay list into readable themes, and showing at a glance how many are on in each theme.

How to use it: 1. Click a tab icon to show its overlay list. 2. Click an overlay to turn it on (it gets a colour) or off. 3. Hover a tab to see its full name in a tooltip.

Tips & limits: - The blue badge on a tab shows how many overlays are active in that category; no badge means none active. - The tab bar scrolls horizontally if the window is narrow. - Turning on My vessel reveals two extra buttons beside it: Center map on vessel (crosshair) and Open simulation panel (play). - Some overlays automatically "fly to" their area of interest when enabled (e.g. Sargassum → Caribbean, Orcas → SW Spain, Strait of Gibraltar), recentring the map.

Presets (saved configurations)

Save a preset

What it's for: remembering an overlay combination under a name (e.g. Transat, Coastal) to recall it in one click.

How to use it: 1. Turn on the overlays you want. 2. Click the + (bookmark) icon in the Presets bar. 3. Type a name in the dialog (Preset name (e.g. Transat, Coastal)). 4. Confirm: the preset appears in the list.

Options & settings:

Tips & limits: - Saving under an existing name overwrites that preset (update, no duplicate). - Presets are listed alphabetically. - Loading a preset fully replaces the active overlay combination. - Presets are stored locally on the device; they don't sync between machines.

Load / delete a preset

What it's for: recalling or cleaning up a saved configuration.

How to use it: 1. Click Presets to open the list. 2. Click a preset's name to apply it (the list closes). 3. To delete, click the trash icon on the row, then confirm (Delete this preset?).

Tips & limits: - If no preset exists, a message invites you to click + to save the current combo.

Climatological mode and overlay restriction

"Forecast-only" overlays

What it's for: some overlays rely on real-time forecast or GRIB data and cannot run in climatological mode (departure more than 7 days out, data from seasonal averages).

How it shows: - In climatological mode, the affected overlays appear greyed out and non-clickable. - The tooltip reads: Unavailable in climatological mode (departure >7 days). Requires real-time forecast or GRIB data.

Tips & limits: - To re-enable these overlays, bring the departure date within 7 days or load a GRIB file.

Minimum zoom requirement

Zoom-sensitive overlays

What it's for: some dense overlays (markers, vector tiles, grids) only display from a certain zoom level, to stay readable and light.

How it shows: when the overlay is on but the zoom is too low, an amber hint line (info icon) appears under the button and states the required zoom.

Tips & limits: - If an active overlay shows nothing, check the amber hint line first: a simple zoom-in is often all it takes.
